Mercedes-Benz R107 · 280–560 SL · 1971–1989

Engine won't crank

Turn the key and the starter doesn't spin — clicks, silence, or dimming dashboard.

Check basics first: battery voltage at rest should be ≥ 12.4 V; ≥ 9.6 V while cranking. The R107 uses a neutral safety switch on the shifter that must close in P or N.

What the diagnosis checks

  1. With the key at START, do you hear a single click or nothing at all?
  2. Battery resting voltage ≥ 12.4 V?
  3. Does the dashboard go dark when you try to crank?
  4. Selector firmly in P or N, brake depressed?

Possible causes it points to

  • Starter solenoid or starter motor
  • Discharged or failing battery
  • Battery cables / ground strap
  • Ignition switch contacts
  • Neutral safety / starter lockout switch
