Mercedes-Benz R107 · 280–560 SL · 1971–1989

Dashboard clock dead or erratic

The analog clock in the R107 instrument cluster has stopped, runs intermittently, or jumps. Most commonly caused by a failed electrolytic capacitor on the small PCB inside the clock module — a well-documented DIY repair.

Applies to 1986–1989 560 SL US-spec instrument clusters with the analog VDO clock at the bottom of the binnacle. Tachometer and speedometer typically still function normally.

What the diagnosis checks

  1. Does the clock face show any movement at all (second hand twitching, hands at random position)?
  2. Does it run for a while then stop, or jump erratically?
  3. Does the cluster have power otherwise (tach, speedo, warning lights work with key on)?

Possible causes it points to

  • Failing clock capacitor (intermittent)
  • Clock mechanism stuck
  • Dead clock capacitor (no movement)
  • No power to the cluster
